What is a chimney cap?

A chimney cap is a metal hood — usually stainless steel — that sits on top of your flue. Its mesh sides let smoke out while its solid lid keeps everything else from getting in. Without one, your flue is simply an open pipe from the sky straight into your living room.

Every cap does four jobs at once: it keeps rain out of the flue, where water rusts dampers and eats mortar from the inside; it blocks birds, squirrels and raccoons that treat an open flue like a hollow tree; it stops embers from riding the draft up and landing on your roof; and it keeps wind from shoving cold air back down into the house.

Why North Texas chimneys need one

DFW weather is hard on masonry. Spring storms drive rain sideways into an open flue, and our freeze–thaw snaps in winter turn that trapped moisture into cracked crowns and spalling brick. Most of the serious water damage we repair started with a missing or rusted-out cap — a problem that would have cost a fraction as much to prevent.

For oversized flues, multi-flue chimneys, or homeowners who want a cleaner architectural look, we measure and fabricate a custom cap — including full-coverage outside-mount designs that shelter the entire crown, not just the flue opening. Pair it with a custom chase cover and the whole top of the chimney is sealed for decades.
